Should We Work It Out?

President Faust gave a wonderful message during the Ensign in August 2004. This covered the difficulties of this dynamic and unique relationship that each of us who marries goes through. This message is here. Some key things that were pointed out was that of a three part 'test' to do a check to see if ending the marriage is justified.

The first part of this 3 part test is the phrase 'prolonged difficulties'. While the time frame is not specified. Action is needed to work through this. If someone is in danger this period is still valid of seperation is active. The safety of children and spouses are vital during any part of a marriage, expecially when difficulties arrise and when they continue.

"The wisdom [or] authority to definitively state what is 'just cause' is unique per situation. Thus only the individuals involved and an omniscient and all-loving God can determine 'just cause'.

(Faust, 2004)

This second part is that of 'apparently irredeemable relationship'. Why we encourage the Lord to be part of every step of one's relationship, this one is vital to work with the Lord on. We can survive many things if we do work through it with our spouses. What we need to be mindful of is have we done all we can. Even as the spouse, we have our responsiblities to aid those who are sick.

Lastly, 'destruction of human dignity' is the third part of this test. These are beyond hardships. This is when the spouse is destroying the individual. Their selfworth and their humanity are vital and deserve to be treated with respect. This isn't just hurt feelings. This can expecially be seen in an adulterous and abusive partners. While they may choose to earnestly repent. They may also choose different.
